Human Elements of Leadership and Management (Management, HELM(M), IMO Model Couse 1.40)

The STCW Human Element Leadership & Management – Management Level (HELM M) course is a mandatory program for masters and officers in management roles onboard vessels based on IMO model course 1.40. This course equips seafarers with the essential leadership, communication, and managerial skills needed to safely manage crew, operations, and vessel in line with international maritime standards. Completion of the HELM (Management Level) course is a requirement for obtaining a Management Level CoC in the UK.

Description

The STCW Human Element Leadership & Management – Management Level (HELM M) course is designed around IMO Model Course 1.40 for senior maritime professionals who hold, or are preparing to hold, management-level positions onboard ships. Delivered as a theory-based training program, this essential course provides masters, chief engineers, chief officers, and second engineers with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to lead effectively, make informed decisions, and maintain high standards of safety and efficiency at sea.

This course is a mandatory requirement for seafarers wishing to obtain a Management Level Certificate of Competency (CoC). It meets the standards of competence set out in STCW Code Tables A‑II/2 and A‑III/2, under the function: Controlling the operation of the ship and caring for persons onboard at the management level.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to confidently demonstrate the leadership and managerial skills required for safe ship operations and effective crew management in compliance with international maritime regulations.

Content

Through a focus on leadership theory, communication strategies, resource management, and team coordination, participants will learn to:

  • Apply effective leadership techniques to manage crew and vessel operations

  • Understand the human element in maritime operations, including behavioural influences and decision-making

  • Enhance situational awareness and problem-solving in complex situations

  • Promote a positive safety culture onboard

  • Safeguard personnel, cargo, and vessel integrity through sound management practices

To provide further shore-based skills, there is the capacity to add the Level 4 Diploma for in Leadership and Management (RQF) to the package, which will include an e-learning segment

ISM Superintendents Training Package

The Superintendent’s Training Package includes a number of sub-courses, and the scheduling for these will be tailored to your needs, within 18 months of starting training. This includes incident investigation, DPA, CSO, Train the Instructor, Dry BMS, Management Self-Assessment, Navigation Auditing, ISM / ISO Lead Auditor and Tanker Vettings.
